SSP BioAnalytics Inc. (SSPBA) is a medical information technology company based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and is an outgrowth of the continuing and urgent need to provide a solution for the increased incidence of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) throughout the world. SSPBA offers an STD reporting and identification system that enables holders of the Safe Sex Passport I.D. Card to efficiently and confidentially communicate their STD/HIV health status to potential partners. The Company's goal is to provide a way for individuals to take responsible action regarding their own personal health status, and the health status of others. SSPBA is committed to helping reduce the spread of STDs by providing individuals and their partners with an added layer of information "protection", and aims to make a difference in the lives of millions of people in the U.S. and throughout the world who have concerns about how STDs could potentially affect their lives.

How We Started

While in school, Gonzalo Paternoster was involved in a program called Youth Leadership Broward, to develop leadership skills and learn about issues in his community. Every month the group would learn about a different topic. For example, one month would involve criminal justice, and the next month may be business. During the month they were learning about health care, the class had a young gentleman come speak. He was about 25 years old, sharp, well educated, good looking and successful. He spent some time telling the class about himself - all of his accomplishments and successes, and he finished with telling them he was also HIV positive.

The whole room was shocked - especially Gonzalo. He thought how could this guy be HIV positive? Back then, there was still a stigma about having HIV. Most people assumed HIV affected only certain classes of people. The visitor then shared with the class that he had only been with one partner, but she didn't know she was HIV positive. That situation had a profound impact on Gonzalo, since it had only happened because the visitor didn't know about his partner's health status.

Years later, Gonzalo was climbing the corporate ladder and did not find that career path as satisfying as he thought it would be. When he was younger, he had always dreamed of making a difference in the world, and he realized that his time was possibly running out.

Gonzalo kept working, but he often thought of his memorable classroom experience. One day, he was out of town visiting family and suddenly awoke around 3am with an idea he couldn't stop thinking about. He ran downstairs, grabbed a pen and paper, and started rapidly organizing the concepts that would eventually become the Safe Sex Passport.
